Port wine is a fortified wine made from grapes grown and processed in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. It is usually a sweet red wine, but there are also dry, semi-dry and white varieties. The wine is fortified by the addition of a neutral grape spirit (aguardente), which increases the alcohol content and gives the port wine its distinctive flavour and rich, complex character.
