While single malts are made from malted barley and bourbon from at least 51% corn, rye whiskey is made from rye. Rye whiskey is the oldest type of whiskey in the USA and is particularly popular there. Straight rye whiskey is subject to the same regulations as straight bourbon. This means that it must not contain any colouring or other additives and must be aged for at least 2 years, or 4 years if not specified. Great examples of American rye are Rittenhouse Rye, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye and Michter's Straight Rye. Unlike bourbon, however, rye can be produced anywhere in the world. This is why there are now great rye whiskies in many countries, such as Stork Club Rye from Germany, Kyrö from Finland andStauning Rye from Denmark. What does rye whiskey taste like? When tasting rye, you will find sweet flavours of caramel and maple syrup as well as spicy notes of cloves, cinnamon and allspice. Thanks to their intense flavours, rye whiskies are perfect for whisky cocktails and long drinks such as the Old Fashioned or the Sazerac.
