Variety beats romance.
The Loch Lomond Distillery is indeed unique. Loch Lomond is the only distillery to produce both malt whisky and unmalted grain whisky. Not only the classic pot stills (for the malt) and large, columnar column or Coffey stills (for the grain) are used for this. At Loch Lomond, flexibility is taken even further. Four of the pot stills are equipped with so-called "rectifiers" in the neck, which enable variable settings. This allows malt whiskies of different character to be produced with the same still. In addition, one of the column stills, which are usually used to produce grain whisky, is even used to produce a malt. In this way, Loch Lomond produces a whole range of different malt whiskies: Loch Lomond, Inchmurrin, Old Rhosdhu, Croftengea, Craiglodge, Inchmoan, Glen Douglas, Inchfad.... And: Loch Lomond is the only distillery to even offer a single blended whisky. In other words, a blend in which the malt and grain whiskies that make it up come from the same distillery.
With so much variety, it is probably forgivable that the distillery is located on the beautiful Loch Lomond - but looks less romantic itself. Rather, well, purposeful...
A little history
A distillery called Loch Lomond existed between 1814 and 1817, but it has nothing to do with the current distillery.
The current Loch Lomond Distillery was built in 1865/66 by the Littlemill Distillery Company Ltd. in an industrial area of the city of Alexandria. The distillery is therefore located exactly on the border between the Highlands and Lowlands. However, because the water comes from the Highlands, Loch Lomond is generally regarded as a Highland distillery.
Loch Lomond was temporarily closed in 1984. A year later, Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse Ltd. bought the distillery and resumed production in 1987. In 1993, a column still or "Coffey Still" was installed. Loch Lomond thus became the only Scottish distillery capable of producing both malt whisky and grain whisky. In 1997, a fire destroyed large parts of the stock. Additional stills were installed as part of the reconstruction work. Some of the pot stills - such as the so-called Lomond stills, which were mainly experimented with in the 1970s - are equipped with special, flexible devices in the neck, so-called "rectifiers". This unique equipment makes it possible to produce a wide range of different whiskies.
What have I actually got in my glass?
As described above: Thanks to its unusual facilities, Loch Lomond can - and does - produce very different whiskies. So there's only one piece of advice: try it out...
3 reasons to love Loch Lomond
1) Because the Inchmurrin comes here.
2) Because the Old Rhosdhu comes here.
3) Because Loch Lomond, Croftengea, Craiglodge, Inchmoan and more come here...
The one dram for the desert island
The 21-year-old Inchmurrin is remarkable in four ways. Non-chill-filtered, without colouring and bottled at 46%, the malt offers pure enjoyment for comparatively little money given its advanced age. It also has a very unique character that is difficult to describe. Grass, fresh hay and flowers meet malt, yeast, vanilla and spiced biscuits. Not for everyone. But very exciting.
