Dailuaine
Translation: Green Valley
Region: Speyside
The 2% chance to discover a gem.
The Dailuaine Distillery has been around for over 160 years. The distillery is located in a beautiful valley in the heartland of Scottish malt whiskey, the Speyside area. Her malt is wonderfully lush, round and elegant - and yet almost unknown.
Why is that?
Probably because at Dailuaine 98% of the total produced malts go in blended whiskeys. So Dailuaine is part of Johnnie Walker, but also of other successful blends of the industry giant Diageo.
Only about 2% are bottled as single malt. Not much. But worth the discovery!
A little history
The Dailuaine Distillery was founded in 1852 by William Mackenzie. After his death in 1865, his widow leased the distillery to James Fleming. The banker from the immediate vicinity, the city of Aberlour, founded in 1879 together with William Mackenzie's son Thomas, the company Mackenzie & Company.
In 1884, Dailuaine was expanded as part of renovations, becoming one of the largest distilleries in the Highlands.
In 1891 Dailuaine-Glenlivet Distillery Ltd. was founded. founded in 1898 and merged with the Talisker Distillery Ltd. to the Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd.
In 1915, Thomas Mackenzie died without leaving an heir. One year later, John Dewar & Sons, John Walker & Sons and James Buchanan & Co. bought the Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd.
In 1917 a fire completely destroyed the pagoda roof. The distillery closed, was reopened three years later and taken over in 1925 by the Distillers Company Limited (DCL).
In 1960, the distillery was renovated and the number of stills increased from four to six. A Saladin box replaced the own Malting Floors. Since 1983, as with most distilleries, malting is no longer done, but the malt is purchased.
Dailuaine was taken over by United Distillers (UD) in 1987 and is now part of Diageo.
What do I actually have in the glass?
Dailuaine is a very full, round and lush malt with fine sweetness and delicate smoky notes. A whiskey, which is always correct and lingers in the mouth.
3 reasons to love Dailuaine
1) Because the malt is a big one.
2) Because the badger on the original label looks so nice.
3) Because the distillery deserves it.
The one drama for the lonely island
The 16-year-old original bottling from the "Flora & Fauna" series presents Dailuaine in its best form: sherrytönig, lush and warm. A pleasure.
