For a long time, Connemara single malt was the only smoky whiskey in Ireland. Although this unique selling point is slowly disappearing with the increase in smoky Irish whiskeys, Connemara whiskey remains the flagship of its genre. In Ireland, the use of peat in whiskey production is an absolute exception. This has long set Irish whiskey apart from Scotch whisky. In Scotland, there are many strongly smoky whiskies, above all the Islay whisky from the Scottish island of the same name.
What does Connemara whiskey taste like? Connemara is a double-distilled single malt that is produced at the Cooley Distillery, even though it is officially distributed by the Kilbeggan Distillery. Thanks to its double distillation, it is full-bodied and aromatic, but remains very smooth due to the low 40% vol. bottling. The strong smoky flavour is clearly noticeable in both the bouquet and the taste. In addition to the smoke, you will find fine herbal notes, roasted grain and a distinct sweetness of wild honey in Connemara whiskeys. To get you started, we recommend the inexpensive Connemara Peated. If you have taken a liking to the Connemara single malt, try the older version, the Connemara 12 year old.
