Ben Nevis
The single malt from Ben Nevis has become a much coveted rarity among whisky lovers. Very little of the mineral-spicy Highland whisky makes it into the bottle as a single malt. However, the demand for this full-bodied Highland malt is still huge. Ben Nevis is an old-school scotch. You can see this not only in the visitor centre, which has remained somewhere in the 90s. You can also taste it in the rough but enormously versatile whisky. Sometimes without smoke, sometimes with peat smoke, with sweet notes of caramel and always a fascinating depth, Ben Nevis always knows how to surprise. It's a shame it's so rare. Grab it when we have one in stock!

Last man standing.
There were once three producing distilleries at the foot of Ben Nevis, Scotland's highest mountain. Nevis, founded in 1878 as the "sister" of the Ben Nevis Distillery, ceased operations in 1908. In 1983, the neighbouring Glenlochy distillery also closed for good and was later partially converted into holiday flats. Only the oldest of the three distilleries in Fort William, Ben Nevis, survived. This is ultimately thanks to the commitment of the Japanese whisky company Nikka, which acquired Ben Nevis in 1989 and helped restore it to its former glory. And if it hasn't died...
What does Ben Nevis mean? The literal translation is "mountain of snow".
Where is Ben Nevis? The Ben Nevis Distillery is located in the western Highlands in the town of Fort William. Ben Nevis is therefore clearly categorised as Highland whisky.
3 reasons to love Ben Nevis
1) Because the snow-capped peak of Ben Nevis is such a beautiful sight.
2) Because Ben Nevis flies the flag.
3) Because the single malt reflects the character of the wild Highlands.
What does Ben Nevis whisky taste like?
Ben Nevis usually has a rather rich, oily body and a distinct sweetness. Its distillery character is characterised by spicy malt notes and a mineral note. Depending on the bottling, more or less smoke, fruitiness and sherry are added, often also dry, woody notes. A very unique single malt scotch with a strong character... Try it out and get to know it!
Our Ben Nevis recommendation:
The availability of Ben Nevis single malt varies greatly. The Ben Nevis 10 Year Old is one of the distillery's few standard bottlings and an excellent whisky. Try it if you get the chance!
A little history
The distillery at the foot of the mountain whose name it bears was founded in 1825 by "Long" John MacDonald. In 1856, after his death, his son Donald P. McDonald took over the distillery. Since 1908, the buildings of the disused Nevis distillery, which was built by Donald in 1878, have been used as warehouses. In 1955, Ben Nevis was acquired by Canadian millionaire Joseph W. Hobbs, who also had a so-called Coffey Still (also known as a "patent still") installed for the production of grain whisky. This was removed in 1971. Ben Nevis was shut down in 1978, and in 1981 the distillery was sold to Long John Distillers and Whitbread, which resumed production in 1984 but ceased again in 1986. In 1989, Nikka took over the distillery. Production has been continuous here again since 1990. A stroke of luck.
