Auchentoshan
The single malt from Auchentoshan Distillery is one of the lightest whiskies in Scotland. Auchentoshan is the only Scotch whisky producer to use triple distillation in the production process. This distillation method, which is otherwise more common in Ireland, makes the whisky softer and lighter. The malt is not smoked over peat and the whiskies are therefore without any hint of smoke. The Scots jokingly refer to Auchentoshan as "breakfast whisky". The character of this classic Lowland whisky is so smooth. So if you like mild whisky and fancy the nutty and fruity character, Auchentoshan is the perfect choice. We recommend the Auchentoshan Three Wood with a double sherry maturation. Dark fruits, chocolate, toffee and nuts characterise this excellent single malt.

Auchentoshan - difficult to pronounce, easy to enjoy
The good thing is: when you order Auchentoshan single malt online, you don't run the risk of floundering when it comes to pronouncing the whisky you want. Who knows, maybe Auchentoshan would be a little less successful otherwise. O-chen-toschen? Ou-ken-toschen? Opinions differ. Even in Scotland. But everyone agrees that Auchentoshan is a wonderfully mild and delicious Lowland single malt Scotch. Auchentoshan is the only Scottish distillery to triple distil its whisky throughout, which is said to give it its particularly mild character.
What does Auchentoshan mean? The translation for Auchentoshan is "field corner" or "corner of the field".
Where is Auchentoshan located? The Auchentoshan Distillery is located in Dalmuir, a part of Clydebank, which in turn is a suburb of Glasgow. The distillery is therefore not only associated with the Scottish Lowlands, Auchentoshan basically represents the light style of lowland whisky like no other.
3 reasons to love Auchentoshan
1) Because love, like Auchentoshan, is a delicate plant.
2) Because the Lowlands deserve much more attention in general.
3) Because you can make a great impression on friends with the name.
What does Auchentoshan taste like?
Auchentoshan is often described as a good malt for beginners. This usually refers to whiskies that are not certain things: Not angular, not massive, not peaty, tangy or medicinal. This applies to Auchentoshan. But it is also something else: floral, fruity, slightly aromatic, delicately sweet and rather mild. This may also be due to the fact that Auchentoshan is triple distilled instead of the usual double distillation in Scotland. Perhaps it is true, and Auchentoshan is actually a good malt for beginners.
Our Auchentoshan recommendation:
The Auchentoshan Three Wood is a real palate-pleaser. Auchentoshan first matures this single malt whisky in ex-bourbon casks, followed by a post-maturation (finishing) in Spanish Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. Sweet, chocolaty and smooth. A malt like a down pillow...
A little history about Auchentoshan
The beginnings of the distillery are somewhat obscure. John Bulloch founded a distillery called Duntocher in Old Kilpatrick as early as 1800. It is no longer possible to say exactly whether this actually gave rise to Auchentoshan. What is certain is that a distillery with the name Auchentoshan was founded in 1823 under the management of John's son Archibald Bulloch. As with so many distilleries, the following decades were eventful. Many owners, little success. Which is somewhat surprising, as the distillery's location is extremely favourable. Close to the commercial centre of Glasgow and not far from the River Clyde, an important transport route. From here, ships set sail for harbours all over the world. During the Second World War, Auchentoshan was partially destroyed in German air raids and was not put back into operation until 1948. Since 1984, Auchentoshan, like Bowmore and Glen Garioch, has belonged to Morrison Bowmore and thus to the Japanese Suntory Group since 1994.
