Ardmore
Ardmore is one of the few predominantly smoky Highland whiskies. The Ardmore distillery is located in the eastern Highlands, not far from the neighbouring Glendronach Distillery. The single malt from Ardmore is malty, spicy and often has a clear smoky note. You will therefore often find notes of roasted grain and burnt heather in whiskies from the Highland distillery. Our tip: try the delicious Ardmore 12 Year Old Port Wood Finish with a delicious maturation in a port wine cask.

Ardmore, Ardmore, Ardbeg? Beware, risk of confusion!
The distillery we are talking about here was founded in 1898 in the Highlands on the edge of the Speyside region. However, between 1817 and 1835, there was already a distillery called Ardmore on the island of Islay. This became Lagavulin in 1837 by merging with another distillery and is not related to today's Ardmore Distillery.
What does Ardmore mean? The name Ardmore comes from the Gaelic and means something like "big hill". Not to be confused with the small hill, Gaelic: Ardbeg...
Where is Ardmore located? The Ardmore Distillery is located near Huntly in the eastern Highlands of Scotland and is therefore part of the Highland Whisky.
3 reasons to love Ardmore
1) Because the malt has strength and character.
2) Because although Ardmore is not Ardbeg, it can also do peat.
3) Because without Ardmore, "Teacher's" would just be a normal blend.
What does Ardmore whisky taste like?
The Ardmore has a very unique character that is rather unusual for its region: powerful, spicy and with distinct smoky peat notes. A single malt that you would expect to find on the islands.
Our Ardmore recommendation
All fans of smoky island whiskies will enjoy the Ardmore 12 Year Old Port Wood Finish, bottled at 46%. The wonderful combination of port cask and peat smoke is simply delightful all round. A whisky that you can brave the wind and weather with.
A little history on Ardmore
The distillery on the eastern edge of Speyside was founded in 1898 by Adam Teacher. He was the son of William Teacher, a renowned whisky merchant who was best known for his "Teacher's Highland Cream" blend, which is still successful today. Adam Teacher did not live to see the completion of the distillery, he died before the first whisky came out of the pot stills.
In 1955, the capacity was expanded from two to four stills, and in 1974 to eight.
In 1976, Allied Distillers took over the company William Teacher & Sons and with it the Ardmore distillery. In the course of this, the company's own malting plant was shut down.
In 2005, Allied and the Ardmore distillery were sold to Pernod Ricard. However, they had to divest Ardmore in order to fulfil the requirements of the antitrust authorities. The distillery then went to Beam Global Spirits & Wine, a subsidiary of the American Fortune Brands.
Since the takeover of Beam Global by the Japanese Suntory Group in January 2014, Ardmore has also belonged to Suntory.
The single malt from Ardmore continues to be a central component of the successful Teacher's blend.
