Welsh Whisky
Welsh whisky, also known as single malt Welsh whisky, is a type of whisky produced in Wales, a country in the United Kingdom. It has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. The monastic orders probably influenced the production and refining methods over the course of time. By the end of the 19th century, however, Welsh whisky was almost extinct when the last distillery closed in 1920. In the 1990s, some entrepreneurs tried to revive Welsh whisky, but their efforts were hampered by legal disputes. Welsh whisky was not produced again until the 2000s, when the Welsh Whisky Company opened a distillery in Penderyn in the Brecon Beacons National Park in 2004. Today, there are four whisky distilleries in Wales, including Penderyn, the Dà Mhile Distillery, the Aber Falls Distillery and the Coles Distillery. Welsh whisky is usually distilled from malted barley and aged for at least three years in American or European oak casks. It can also be stored in casks that have previously been filled with other spirits such as bourbon or sherry.
