Indian Whisky
"India... Close your eyes and say INDIA." You're probably thinking of many things, but probably not whisky. Yet India is both the country with the largest whisky production and the largest whisky consumption in the world. This fact is little known, as most of what is sold as whisky in India would not be whisky under European law. In some cases, molasses is used as a base, which would probably be more akin to rum. These rather obscure products are also not exported. However, two distilleries in particular show that excellent single malt whisky is produced in India that deserves your attention. The Amrut Distillery has had a quality whisky on the world market since 2004 with its Amrut single malt, which bears no comparison with its Scotch siblings. In fact, the whisky first began its career in the demanding European market and was put to the test in blind tastings in Scotland. The second whisky from India that we would like to recommend to you is Paul John. The exotic single malt from Goa has been available since 2012. A real treat! How is Indian whisky made? The two distilleries mentioned work according to the Scottish model. The unpeated barley is grown in India, but both also import smoked malt from Scotland for their smoky whiskies. Distillation takes place in copper pot stills. Due to the Indian climate, the whiskies mature extremely quickly and therefore have to leave the barrel early. What does Indian whisky taste like? Both Amrut and Paul John whiskies are characterised by aromas of tropical fruits and exotic spices. Both offer non-smoky (unpeated), lightly smoky (lightly peated) and heavily smoky (heavily peated) single malt whiskies. In terms of price-performance, India is far ahead of the competition in the Asian region of Japan. In our view, Indian whisky is therefore a real insider tip!
