Australian Whisky
Whisky from Australia, especially Australian single malt, is something like the secret superstar of the whisky world. Australian whisky is still not getting the attention it deserves here. The Japanese whisky exploded into world fame when a Yamazaki single malt was recognised in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible in 2015. However, the general public seems to have missed out on what Australian whisky had already achieved a year earlier. In 2014, the Sullivans Cove French Oak Cask was voted the "World's Best Single Malt" at the World Whiskies Awards, ahead of Ireland, Scotland and Japan. In 2019, Sullivans Cove repeated this success with the same title, something no whisky had ever achieved before. Since then, it has been clear that whisky from Down Under should be on our radar. Above all, Tasmania has developed into an important whisky region. Bill Lark started producing whisky there with the Lark Distillery in the 1990s and is regarded as the father of Australian whisky. A lot has happened since then. Unfortunately, Australian whiskies are still hard to come by or too expensive, such as the whiskies from Hellyers Road Distillery and Bakery Hill. With the modern Starward Distillery in Melbourne, an Australian whisky with a good price-performance ratio has finally made it to Germany. You should definitely try it!
