Tomintoul

Translation: Barn Hill
Region: Speyside

From high altitude records, low highlands and high lowlands ...

Proud 345 meters high, the village of Tomintoul rises above the green meadows of the Speyside area. This makes Tomintoul the highest village in the Highlands. Paradoxically, the Lowlands have much higher elevations, such as Wanlockhead at 432m.
Incidentally, the distillery Tomintoul is not in the eponymous village, contrary to what one might expect. But about eight kilometers away. Therefore, it is not quite enough for the title of the highest highland distillery. That's where Braeval and Dalwhinnie are ahead. But ultimately - what do such records count?

A little history

Tomintoul is a relatively young distillery. It was founded in 1964 by the companies W & S Strong and Hay & MacLeod as equal partners.
In 1973 White & Mackay took over the distillery, and a year later the number of stills was doubled from two to four.
In 2000, Tomintoul Distillery went to independent bottler Angus Dundee Distillers.

What do I actually have in the glass?

The Tomintoul Malt has a luscious, malty sweetness and often an almost creamy, full body. A malt like a dessert.

3 reasons to love Tomintoul

1) Because the distillery is so romantic on forest and water
2) Because the legendary "perfume bottle" of the previous bottlings is cult.
3) Because Tomintoul is good with and without peat.

The one drama for the lonely island

Speyside goes Islay: Unusual, but extremely interesting is the heavily peated Tomintoul sold as "Old Ballantruan".
