Strathmill

Translation: mill in the valley
Region: Speyside

The malt we had to wait for over 100 years.

Already in 1891 the Strathmill Distillery arose from a former flour mill. However, the malt whiskey produced here disappeared without exception in the blended whiskeys of the respective owners. Only after more than 100 years, in 1993, was there for the first time a Strathmill Single Malt to buy, bottled and offered by the retailer "Oddbins". It should take another eight years until finally there was also an official original bottling: a 12-year-old from the so-called Flora & Fauna series of the then owner United Distillers. Anyone who has ever tasted a Strathmill single malt will rightly ask: why not please earlier ?!

A little history

The Strathmill distillery was founded in 1891. For this purpose, they built an old flour mill. Initially, however, the distillery was still called Glenisla-Glenlivet. It did not get its present name until 1895, when the renowned spirits dealers W. and A. Gilbey acquired the distillery. The merger of Gilbey with Justerini & Brooks Strathmill 1962 part of International Distillers & Vintners (IDV) and is now part of Diageo. In 1969, the capacity was increased from two to four stills.

What do I actually have in the glass?

The original bottling from the Flora & Fauna series is relatively delicate with a fairly light body. Some independent bottlings are much luscious, more powerful. All have in common a pleasant sweetness and clear notes of vanilla and oak.

3 reasons to love Strathmill

1) Because waiting can be worthwhile.
2) Because an old mill is such a fitting home for a malt distillery.
3) Because fruits, vanilla and spices harmonize perfectly.

The one drama for the lonely island

The 21-year-old from Douglas Laings Old Particular series is sweet, vanilla, spicy, with a wonderful fruity scent and notes of oak. A multi-layered single cask bottling full of discoveries.
