Grain whisky is one of the two main types of Scotch whisky. While malt whisky is distilled from 100% barley malt, grain whisky uses different types of grain. Hence the name "grain" whisky, the English word for grain. Wheat or maize is usually used here, but barley can also be used in grain scotch whisky. In Scotland, grain whisky is distilled on column stills, continuous distillation columns. This produces a lighter character compared to the pot still distilled single malt whiskies. If the grain whisky comes from just one distillery, it is referred to as single grain whisky. In Scotland, grain whisky is mostly used as an ingredient for blended Scotch whisky and contributes to the lightness and sweetness. Standard bottlings are the exception rather than the rule. At independent bottlers, however, you will find what you are looking for and often get very old grain whiskies at a good price. Especially in summer, the light grain Scotch whiskies can be a nice alternative to the heavy malts. Have fun discovering them!
