Takamaka Rum is a rum brand that is produced in the Seychelles. The company was founded by Bernard and his father Robert, who were inspired by Robert's father René Michel d'Offay to start producing their own rum. Without access to distillation equipment, the two men turned their swimming pool into a cooling tower and experimented with different recipes. Together with Bernard's older brother Richard, they founded the Trois Frères distillery in the Seychelles in 2002.
Takamaka Rum is named after a popular beach on the islands and is produced on the La Plaine St. André estate, which has a long history dating back to 1792. The estate was originally a plantation where spices such as vanilla and cinnamon were grown, as well as coconuts, which were exported to Europe. Today, the estate is not only home to the Takamaka Rum distillery, but also a visitor's paradise with a museum, a herb and spice garden, a ruin site and a home for the Aldabra giant tortoises Taka and Maka.
All ingredients used in Takamaka's products, including water and sugar cane, are sourced locally in the Seychelles. The company uses traditional distillation methods to produce its range of rums, including its flagship Takamaka Bay Rum and various aged expressions. Takamaka also produces a range of flavoured rums made with local ingredients such as coconut, vanilla and lime.
