A gin bottled at cask strength or only slightly diluted, which has an alcohol content of more than 50% (around 57% is usual). This gin got its name because it was part of the rations of marines in the British Royal Navy from the 17th century onwards. It is also known as "Overproof" or "Gunpowder Proof" gin. The latter name is due to the fact that gunpowder on naval ships also ignited when gin was spilt over it. The flavour of navy strength gin is usually very strong and intense, which is why it is primarily used for mixing cocktails.
