Mannochmore

Translation: Great monk
Region: Speyside

A lot of smoke around a very dark lake.

In 1996, the Mannochmore distillery launched a malt that still haunts tempers: the Loch Dhu ("Black Sea") was actually almost black. He tasted a lot of liquorice cough syrup. Despite the almost completely black coloring, one always disputed the addition of dyes from the distillery side. One suspicion is that the dark color came about through a special way of burning out the barrels.
Loch Dhu has not been produced for several years. Whatever one thinks of him, he has brought much attention to the relatively unknown Mannochmore distillery and, despite his strange character, is a sought-after collector's whiskey today.

A little history

The Mannochmore distillery was founded in 1971 by John Haig & Co. First and foremost, it was intended to meet the demand for malt whiskey for the successful Haig blends (including "Dimple"). Between 1985 and 1989 Mannochmore was shut down. In 1992, the first original bottling in the so-called Flora & Fauna series came onto the market. In 1996, Mannochmore presented a black malt called Loch Dhu, whose production is now discontinued.
After renewed decommissioning from 1995 to 1997 Mannochmore currently produces only in the winter months. The distillery is then operated by the workers of the neighboring Glenlossie distillery, which in turn only produces in the other half of the year.

What do I actually have in the glass?

The actual whiskey of Mannochmore has little in common with the hole Dhu described above. The Mannochmore is a fine, tender malt that is decidedly clean and balanced. Fresh, fruity aromas meet a rather dry, slightly smoky body.

3 reasons to love Mannochmore

1) Because the Mannochmore Malt is pleasantly flowery and fresh.
2) Because the strange hole Dhu delivers conversation even today.
3) Because Mannochmore and Glenlossie show how neighborhood help is lived.

The one drama for the lonely island

The 12-year original bottling in the Flora & Fauna series shows how Mannochmore really is: fruity, soft and pleasant all around.
