Jura
Translation: Deer Island
Region: Iceland
Red deer, visions of the future and a lot of loneliness.
The Jura Distillery is perhaps the hardest to reach of all Scottish distilleries. It is located in Craighouse, the main (and actually only) place on the Hebridean island of Jura. What does not exist here: An airport. A bridge. A ferry from the mainland (at least not in the period from September to April).
If you want to go to the Isle of Jura, you have to translate from the neighboring island of Islay - and that is itself anything but conveniently located.
What exists on Jura next to the distillery: 1 hotel, 200 people, 6000 (!) Red deer and lots and lots of rest. They are liked by writers. Among other things, George Orwell wrote here his famous novel "1984". As gloomy as in this oppressive vision of the future, it is not at all on Jura. Just a bit out of the way.
A little history
The Isle of Jura distillery was built in 1810. However, only a few of the buildings date back to the Wilhelminian era.
In 1876, the distillery under James Ferguson & Sons was completely rebuilt. The distillery closed in 1901, was partially dismantled and fell into a slumber for about 60 years.
It was not until 1963, after extensive refurbishment of the operation under the leadership of the company Mackinlay - McPherson wiedergest.17878, the number of pot stills increased from two to four. In 1985 the Invergordon Distillers bought the distillery.
After several mergers, acquisitions and renaming under the owners Jura is now part of Whyte & Mackay and thus the United Spirits Group.
What do I actually have in the glass?
The Isle of Jura is rather untypical for an island whiskey. Not as pungent as the neighbors of Islay, not as heavy as Talisker and not as oily and heather as Highland Park. One would expect this round, only slightly smoky Malt with its fine sweetness and the fresh sea breeze, perhaps rather in the (northern) Highlands.
3 reasons to love law
1) Because 6000 red deer can not be wrong.
2) Because whiskey and peace fit together well.
3) Because the malt is surprisingly atypical.
The one drama for the lonely island
The 16 year old "Diurach's Own" is very sumptuous and captivates with a whole basket full of flavors from the Christmas bakery.
