Edradour
The Edradour Distillery is not only one of the smallest whisky distilleries in Scotland, but also one of the most beautiful. You almost feel like you're walking through a film set when you visit the distillery in the Highlands. The Highland town of Pitlochry attracts countless visitors every year, not least because of Edradour. But Edradour is far more than just a pretty facade. This is where one of the most exciting single malt whiskies in Scotland is produced. Using traditional production methods and tiresome manual labour, a Highland whisky is produced here that is second to none. Sweet malt, heavy caramel and refined fruity flavours from exciting oak casks that previously contained sherry, port wine and the best wines await your nosing glass. Friends of smoky whiskies will be spoilt by Edradour's Ballechin single malts. The heavily peated whiskies can compete with the Islay whiskies, although the Highland smoke has its own character. Discover Edradour whiskies in all their diversity now!
What's small and has red doors?
Right: The Edradour Distillery. With its striking red doors in the flat, whitewashed buildings, the pretty distillery on the outskirts of Pitlochry is probably one of the most photographed motifs in Scotland. And one of the most visited whisky distilleries. There are only three men making whisky in one of Scotland's smallest distilleries. The lovingly handcrafted single malt is produced here using traditional methods. A dwindling 12 casks a week. However, this now requires 20 guides to look after the 100,000 or so visitors each year.
Here at Edradour, they also have the smallest stills - right on the edge of legality. If the copper pot stills were even slightly smaller, they would be considered transportable under Scottish law. That would be illegal. And Edradour would be an illegal moonshine distillery. For a long time, Edradour was regarded as the smallest whisky distillery in Scotland. It has since been overtaken by smaller projects. Where the entrance sign once read "The smallest distillery in Scotland", it is now emblazoned with "Scotland`s little gem". We think this is also a fitting title when you have the excellent single malt whiskies from Edradour in your glass. Owner Andrew Symington has good contacts in the wine industry, which is why Edradour whiskies are often aged in outstanding sherry, port, white wine and other wine casks.
For fans of smoky Scotch whiskies, Edradour has the Ballechin single malts. The heavily smoky Highland whisky can certainly compete with its siblings from the island of Islay. Smoke fans should definitely try this malt.
What does Edradour mean? The translation for Edradour is: Between two waters.
Where is Edradour located? The Edradour Distillery is situated on the edge of the picturesque Highland village of Pitlochry. This in turn lies at the foothills of the Cairngorm National Park in the central Highlands. Edradour is therefore a flawless Highland whisky.
3 reasons to love Edradour
1) Because small is beautiful.
2) Because it's no coincidence that this distillery is so popular.
3) Because the small distillery has great character.
What does Edradour whisky taste like?
The malts from Edradour have a very unique, fascinating character. Sweet malt, almonds, caramel & biscuits and various spices. The oak influence is often clearly noticeable, as Edradour uses very exciting wine casks. The bottlings under the distillery name Edradour are not smoky, while the Ballechin bottlings are heavily peated and heavily smoky.
Our Edradour recommendations
Edradour only has a very small standard range, but this already trumps most major Scotch whisky brands in terms of quality. The only regularly available Edradour single malts are the mild Edradour 10 year old and the sherry bomb Edradour 12 year old Caledonia. Both are highly recommended. The same applies to its smoky sibling, the Ballechin 10 year old.
Lovers of intense whiskies from sherry casks should reach for the Edradour 10-year-old single cask bottlings from Signatory. Edradour's premier class can be found in the Straight From The Cask (SFTC) bottlings. These fine whiskies are not diluted with water and are bottled straight from the cask. Supplied in small wooden boxes, they also look great. More Scotch whisky is not possible!
A little history about Edradour
The beginnings of the distillery date back to 1825, when it was probably founded by a cooperative of farmers. The official foundation and first documentary mention dates back to 1837. Two milestones in the history of the distillery, which still looks like a small farm today, are particularly noteworthy: Edradour was connected to the public electricity grid in 1947. The first single malt bottling was released in 1986. Since 2002, the distillery has been owned by Andrew Symington, who has made an excellent name for himself in the whisky world as an independent bottler with his company Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Company Ltd.
