Douglas Laing & Co. Ltd.

Many family, many barrels.

Doulas Laing is a company with a strong sense of family. Founded in Glasgow in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing, today it is run by Fred Junior and his daughter Cara in the third generation. Until recently, Stewart Laing, the second son of Fred Senior, was also on board. After 40 years together, he decided that it was time to build something new. Together with his sons Andrew and Scott, in 2013 he founded the new company Hunter Laing & Co., which also excels as an independent bottler of high quality whiskeys.
The business separation of the two brothers, as both emphasize, was very harmonious. The brand names of the introduced series such as Old Malt Cask, Provenance or Director's Cut were shared as brotherly as the valuable stock.
What made Douglas Laing famous is the sheer inexhaustible supply of often very old barrels of coveted single malts or grain whiskeys. At the end of the 90s, for example, the Ardbeg fans were driven by one rapture to the next, when they released outstanding single cask bottlings from different Ardbegs from 1972, 1973, 1974 or 1975 in rapid succession - collectors' items in great demand today. Also rarities from distilleries like North British or the "lost distillery" Port Ellen gave and gives it from Douglas Laing. Let's hope that your camp will never be empty ...

Which whiskey do they make?

At the heart of the Douglas Laing portfolio are the single cask bottlings of selected malts or grain whiskeys. These range from the more recent 46% bottled whiskey of the "Provenance" series over the older "Old Particular" bottlenecks with around 50% to the extremely old and rare Cask Strength treasures of the "Director's Cut" or " XOP "range, bottled in cask strength. All have in common is the absence of cooling filtration and dyes. These single cask whiskeys are complemented by the Vatted Malts "Scallywag", "Timorous Beastie", "Rock Oyster" and "Big Peat", each of which reflects the typical character of a region. For the "Double Barrel" series, the malts of two distilleries are brought together, under the name "Single Minded" Douglas Laing offers various small batch single malts. Ultimately, there are some highly interesting single grain whiskeys in the "Clan Denny" series and two blended scotch whiskeys with McGibbon's and King of Scots.
The legendary series "The Old Malt Cask", with which Douglas Laing acquired international fame as an independent bottler, has belonged to Hunter Laing, the company of Stewart Laing and his sons since the separation of the two Laing brothers in 2013.
