Attention, now it gets a bit complicated. The story of Clynelish goes like this: In 1819 a distillery called Clynelish was founded in the village of Brora in the north of the Highlands. Almost 150 years later, in 1967, a second, more modern distillery was built on the site. She was supposed to replace the first one. However, since the demand for peated malts was quite high at the time, the "old" distillery was also allowed to continue production. For a while, both sister distilleries worked side by side under the names "Clynelish A" (the old one) and "Clynelish B" (the new one). Clynelish A produced a more peated malt. After some time, the new distillery was officially named Clynelish and the old distillery was renamed "Brora". Under this name, she continued to produce her powerful malt until it finally closed in 1983. So, when we talk about "Clynelish" today, we usually mean the "new" Clynelish distillery - unless the precious drop was distilled before 1967. Actually everything is very simple.

Since 1987 Clynelish belongs to United Distillers (UD) and since 1998 to Diageo.
In 2005, Clynelish joined Caage Ila, Glen Elgin, Knockando and Royal Lochnagar in Diageo's expanded Classic Malt Selection.
