Braeval

Translation: Upper end of the slope

Region: Speyside

You could have thought that right away.

"Glenlivet" is one of the big names in the whiskey world. Glenlivet Distillery has been in existence since 1824 and enjoys an excellent reputation among malt lovers. In 1973, a good 150 years after the founding of the Glenlivet distillery, Chivas Brothers Ltd. a new distillery in the immediate vicinity - and they called Braes of Glenlivet. Whether intended or not, it led to confusion. So it was decided in 1995 to rename the Braes of Glenlivet Distillery in Braeval. Actually, you could have done that from the beginning. Because the malt is so good and interesting that he does not even need to sail under a foreign flag.

A little history

The distillery was founded in 1973 as Braes of Glenlivet by Chivas Brothers Ltd. founded, a subsidiary of Seagram. First and foremost, the new Malt distillery was to produce for the successful Chivas Regal blends. In 1975 Bares of Glenlivet was expanded from three to five stills, in 1978 finally to six.
In 1995, the name was changed to Braeval to avoid confusion with the Glenlivet distillery.
In 2001, Chivas Brothers were bought by Pernod Ricard. The new owners shut down Braeval only a year later. The distillery was reopened in 2008 and has been producing consistently since then. Mainly to cover the need for blended whiskey.

What do I have in the glass?

The Braeval is a quite powerful malt with creamy sweetness and luscious fruit.

3 reasons to love Braeval

1) Because the 70s were not so bad after all.

2) Because the characterful Malt does not have to hide behind anything or anyone.

3) Because Braeval is one of the prettiest distilleries of recent date.

The one drama for the lonely island

If you still find Douglas Laing's rare and not-so-cheap 25-year-old Directors' Cut, buy him. And until then enjoy the excellent and enjoyably priced 15 year old Signatory from 1998.
