Who was Grace O'Malley?

Grace O'Malley, also known as the “Pirate Queen” of Ireland, was what we would call a real “boss lady” today - only in the 16th century and with a ship instead of an office. Her nickname “Gráinne Mhaol” (the “Shorn One”) didn't come from the fact that she forwent hairstyles - no, she simply shaved her head to show her father that she was just as capable as he was! 
She not only made a name for herself as a fearless sailor, but also as a nightmare for the English kingdom. She led her own fleet and was known for mastering everything from raiding merchant ships to naval battles. 
And all this without the typical pirate cliches - no eye patch, no parrots, but a lot of charm and a healthy dose of cheek.
She became a symbol of resistance against English colonial rule. 

Grace showed the world that a woman could not only keep up in a world dominated by men, but also sail at the forefront. Grace O'Malley was even received by Queen Elizabeth I - a meeting in which she confidently confronted the monarch. If anyone took the pirate "business" seriously back then, it was Grace!

Today, she would probably be considered "the First Lady of the High Seas" - with a healthy dose of Irish pride!
