James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail 1895 opened their small grocery store in the heart of the Scottish whisky region probably had no idea that whisky fans would still be indebted to them today. From the very beginning, they stocked some of the best Scottish single malts in their store, with their motto always being to offer excellent items at affordable prices.
In these early years a young man called John Urquhart joined the company as an apprentice. He helped James Gordon select and purchase whiskies and became senior partner in 1915. His passion for the influence of casks on New Makes made the company what it was it is today: One of the world's most renowned independent bottlers, who matures distillates from local Scottish distilleries in barrels himself.
