Portrait: What makes the Macallan - A Night on Earth Edition 2024 special

The edition of the year 2024 of the “A Night on Earth” series is inspired by New Year's Eve in Jerez de la Frontera: a night full of meaning and tradition known as Nochevieja, which means "Old Night" means.

In many cultures around the world, the end of the year is a time of togetherness. A night to be with the people we love most, to reflect on the past and toast what is to come. This festival is accompanied by traditions and rituals that have been passed down from generation to generation until they become part of the soul of a place. 
For the last edition of the series - for the 200th anniversary of the Macallan Distillery - The Macallan collaborated with Maria Melero, who was born in Jerez and captured her memories of the Christmas season in her hometown as inspiration to create the designs during the unique A Night on Earth unboxing experience can be enjoyed. 
New Year's Eve in Spain is inextricably linked with grapes and the sound of church bells that welcome the arrival of the New Year. It is said that anyone who managed to eat 12 grapes before the midnight bells stopped ringing must have had a good year.
This tradition began at the end of the 19th century and was carried out by farmers in southeastern Spain popularized in a particularly good year for the harvest, when they began selling their surplus grapes as a sign of good luck to celebrate the New Year.

The Presentation: Macallan - A Night on Earth Edition 2024

The exterior of the gift box depicts a nighttime vineyard landscape in which the symbolism of the protective character of the rose bushes is expressed in the lower part of the work of art. 
In the upper area we see a red night sky the moon and a shooting star. The sherry wine used to flavor the Oak Casks in which the whiskey matures is grown in fields like this one throughout Jerez de la Frontera.
When you open the gift box, the interior is presented with depictions of "azulejos", traditional wall tiles Jerez. They are a representation of the artist's first glimpse of the artist's Spanish homeland, imbued with the promise of a traditional family celebration.
Finally, behind the bottle are depicted bright golden grapes from the vineyards of Jerez, representing the sherry wine that will one day fill the barrels from The Macallan will mature. These are reminiscent of the tradition of eating grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve.

Tasting-Notes: This is how the Macallan - A Night on Earth Edition 2024 tastes like:

• Nose: Pestiños coated in honey, sweet raisins with spicy cinnamon and anise, followed by intense aromas of spicy oak and lively citrus fruits
• Palate: at the beginning sweet pastries and white grapes, followed by honey-glazed almonds and vanilla, above all balanced spices and a hint of fresh rosemary
• Finish: long finish - pleasantly sweet, lively and warming

As a whiskey maker, it has been wonderfully enriching to be able to tell part of this story through a whisky. A combination of European and American sherry casks has allowed us to capture the flavors, traditions and Maria's memories to capture the New Year in Jerez de la Frontera, the home of sherry wine."
