Windswept, wild and beautiful: A tiny island off the west coast of Scotland makes whisky history. Since 2017, single malt has been legally distilled on the Isle of Raasay for the first time. The Isle of Raasay Distillery is now opening a new chapter with its Oak Species Maturation Series.

The limited bottlings in the series will make the character of individual oak species accessible - and demonstrate that no pre-filling with wine, sherry etc. is required to provide whisky with complex, deep aromas.

The first proof comes from the Isle of Raasay - Quercus Humboldtii Columbian Oak. Aged entirely in Virgin Oak Barriques made from Colombian oak, this single malt is extremely rare. Anyone who gets hold of one of the 8,500 bottles available worldwide will discover delicious aromas of crème brûlée and heather smoke.

Tasting Notes: This is what the Isle of Raasay - Quercus Humboldtii Columbian Oak tastes like

• Nose: clearly soft aromatic heather smoke, followed by intense fruity aromas of light stone fruit - apricots and mirabelle plums
• Palate: mouth-filling with clear notes of crème brûlée, then again heather and bright fruits
• Finish: complex and long in the finish - now clear vanilla, too Butterscotch, crème brûlée and spicy oak
