Portrait: What makes the Balvenie 18 year old - A Collection of Curious Casks special
The Balvenie's Curious Casks Collection was created in collaboration between Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie and Samples Coordinator George Paterson and celebrates their close collaboration and the treasures of the Balvenie warehouses.
The first two bottlings of the Curious Casks Collection will follow in summer 2024 on Kelsey McKechnie's successful debut, the Balvenie 19 Years Revelation of Cask and Character, which was named Whisky of the Year 2024 by the Whisky Botschafter.
The Casks come from a series of experiments by David Stewart as part of the development of the Balvenie 16 year old French Oak. After completing these experiments, they decided to take an alternative route with the 16-year-old and matured these distillates in French oak for a further 8 years.
Kelsey and George discovered these special Casks by chance and were thrilled with the samples.

Nose: warming aromas of roasted oak , with delicate spices and silky-soft caramel - above all a touch of ripe berries

Palate: intense layers of spices and full-bodied sweetness of creamy vanilla and soft honey - followed by gentle, woody ones Tannins

Finish: long-lasting finish - the berries, vanilla and honey remain for a long time
