Portrait: What makes the Balvenie 14 year old - A Collection of Curious Casks special

The Balvenie's Curious Casks Collection was created in collaboration between Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie and Samples Coordinator George Paterson and celebrates their close collaboration and the treasures of the Balvenie warehouses.

The first two bottlings of the Curious Casks Collection will follow in summer 2024 on Kelsey McKechnie's successful debut, the Balvenie 19 Year Revelation of Cask and Character, which was named Whisky of the Year 2024 by the Whisky Botschafter.

Although no peaty malt was used, the contents of these special casks were slightly smoky in the flavor profile that it was distilled the week after Balvenie's Week of Peat and then matured in American Bourbon Barrels. These unique notes were so special that Kelsey and George created their own whisky from them.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Balvenie 14 year old - A Collection of Curious Casks tastes like

  • Nose: velvety sweet aromas of rich toffee and spicy oak, followed by crisp citrus aromas and honey musk
  • Palate: candied Orange peel and earthy-woody notes, roasted malt and a strong vanilla-oak note
  • Finish: long-lasting finish - vanilla, oak, malt and oranges are present for a long time
