Portrait: What makes the Ballechin 20 year old Matured in 1st-fill Bourbon Barrels special

Edradour has been on the popularity scale for singles since it was taken over by Signatory founder Andrew Symington in 2002. Malt fans pretty high up. The unadulterated, sometimes very smoky whiskeys from the distillery, located in the Highlands east of Pitlochry, are sometimes made using original equipment from the 19th century.

The Ballechin 20 years Matured in 1st-fill Bourbon Barrels comes from the highly peaty branch of the Edradour Distillery. Distilled on March 2, 2004, the Highlander matured exclusively in first fill Barrels that were pre-filled with excellent Bourbon from Old Grand Dad. After 20 years of maturation, bottled on March 4th, 2024, the single malt, limited to 2,016 bottles, develops uninhibited smoke, spice and sweetness at a cask strength of 52.8%vol.

  • Nose: slightly smoky aromas of peat smoke, plus spicy tones of cloves and caneel - in the background some barley and vanilla
  • Palate: creamy with clearly malty notes, now the vanilla is more noticeable, plus spicy oak and shortbread - above all peat smoke and fresh ginger
  • Finish: long on the finish - with hints of bright fruits, lots of malt, spicy oak - above all warm peat smoke
