Portrait: What makes the Christian Drouin 1991 Calvados Pays d'Auge Journal des Kirsch N. 6 special
French spirits tell stories of traditional craftsmanship and strict quality standards, from vineyards passed down through generations, our own sugar cane plantations and authentic bottlings from small producers. Inspired by the adventure stories of the historical “Journal des romans populaires illustrés”, this story tells about the experiences that Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados and Rhum have to offer: excitement, surprise, variety and delight.
With outstanding single casks the potential of distilled delicacies from France and the French overseas departments becomes public. Page six of the Journal des Kirsch is now filled with an exclusive experience from the Pays d'Auge.
Guillaume Drouin was infected with the Calvados virus by his father. Today he runs the traditional business from Pont-l'Évêque in Normandy and uses his distillates to reveal the full complexity of the around 35 organic cider apple varieties from his own orchards.
The highly limited Christian Drouin 1991 comes from the house's rich, mature stocks. The Single Cask fills the sixth page of the Journal des Kirsch and tells of the renowned Pays d'Auge, the heart of the precisely defined growing region for apple brandy.
The Calvados was distilled in the traditional Drouin still, which consists of three small stills with a capacity of 400, 600 and 1,200 liters. It then matured in a barrel that was over 60 years old, which gave the young spirit an incomparable rancio note. After 32 years, the rarity was finally bottled in November 2023 - in cask strength, without any additives or artificial flavors, in only 84 bottles.
