Portrait: What makes the Laphroaig Elements L 2.0 special

Laphroaig Elements is a series of whiskies , which deals with the art of production that makes Laphroaig whisky so intense in taste and full of character. With single malts, experiments are often reserved for barrel maturation rather than changes in production. However, the Elements series was born out of the question of how the character of the whisky develops when production methods are experimented with at the Islay distillery.
In the development of Elements 2.0, the second edition The collection, the Laphroaig Distillery team had free rein to create something unexpected that embodies the Laphroaig profile while opening up new taste dimensions .

In this second edition we explore the effects of an extended fermentation process on the characterful malt. This whisky was distilled in a particularly frosty January. Instead of the 55-hour fermentation time used in Elements 1.0, this whisky was made from a series of longer fermentations lasting to lasted up to 115 hours in the vat. The special ventilation ensures that the fermentation conditions from back then are maintained.This special fermentation emphasizes the fruitier notes of the Laphroaig single malt, while the typical peaty character is retained.

ELEMENTS L 1.0 vs. L 2.0 - What is special about the Laphroaig Elements -Series?

The Laphroaig Elements series shows the effect of experimentation in the manufacturing process. This differs from the traditional experiments in whisky making, which focus exclusively on the final phase - maturation in Casks.

What is the difference between Elements 1.0 and Elements 2.0?
Each of these whiskies is the result of slightly different experiments carried out during the production process. 

Elements 1.0 - the culmination of 3 experiments:
A combination of cloudy and semi-cloudy mash, 8.5 ton and 11 ton mashes (past and present production standards) and 100% Islay malt.
The result? A spicy and peppery whiskey with smoky notes and more pronounced aromas of tropical fruits.

Elements 2.0 - the effect of extended fermentation:
Instead of 55 hours were used to make this whisky A series of longer fermentations were set up, with the longest lasting up to almost 5 days/115 hours in specially ventilated vats that replicate the traditional fermentation process.
The result? A fruitier whisky with the same peaty character we know and love.

Tasting Notes: This is what the Laphroaig Elements L 2.0 tastes like

• Nose: sweet, fruity and subtly maritime with aromas of stewed green apples, velvety, rich vanilla pudding, with crispy pastries sprinkled with powdered sugar, a touch of spicy orange peel with freshly picked Rhubarb and cut grass - in the background there are subtle peaty notes and salted smoked mackerel.
• Palate: fruity-sweet and slightly salty - again the spicy orange peel, now crunchy green apples and freshly picked pears, plus notes of liquid honey and soft fudge with an underlying soft peatiness of smoldering campfire and smoked seafood
• Finish: soft and sweet with an increasingly warming smokiness in the long Exit
