Portrait: What makes the Kilchoman Vintage 2010 Bourbon Cask #479/2010 The Sister Casks special

The single cask Kilchoman Vintage 2010 Bourbon Cask #479/2010 matured for over 13 years in a fresh Bourbon Barrel and was bottled for the 50th anniversary of the Hanseatische Weinhandelsgesellschaft. Three sets of sister Casks are being released for this anniversary series, the sister barrel of this bottling is Cask #478/2010. 

For the 50th anniversary of the Hanseatische Weinhandelsgesellschaft (German importer and partner of Kilchoman), on the last trip to Islay, six exceptional and previously never released Kilchoman casks were selected (The Sister Casks) and released as “one-of-a-kind” editions to mark the anniversary.  
It is a rare selection of single casks from the distillery's early years, of which Kilchoman only has a handful of casks left, including the first Oloroso sherry single cask maturations as well as a 100% Islay malt with age statement, distilled from the farm distillery's own barley.
These single casks were personally made by Peter Wills and Stephan Ehmke in the distillery's Dunnage Warehouse selectedand released as “The Sister Casks,” meaning that these casks were distilled and casked on the same day. After filling the exquisite Casks, the individual maturation period of “The Sister Casks” began. The respective sister Casks were also filled on the same day. An exciting journey of discovery into how aromas develop individually in each Cask.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Kilchoman Vintage 2010 Bourbon Cask #479/2010 The Sister Casks tastes like

• Nose: sweet peat smoke and ripe soft fruits are present
• Palate: soft and mouth-filling - ripe light fruits and some vanilla, plus vanilla fudge and spicy oak - soft peat smoke over everything
• Finish: long in the sweet and spicy finish - the vanilla and the fudge again, the fruits recede a little and make room for the peat smoke
