Portrait: What makes the Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013 special.

The Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013 is an absolute highlight for all Port Charlotte fans. Distilled exclusively with barley from its home island, this single malt embodies everything an Islay whisky should stand for. Adam Hannett, the master behind this exceptional wine, emphasizes that the latest vintage fits seamlessly into the range of Port Charlotte Islay Barley Expressions.

The philosophy behind this whiskey revolves around the importance of barley and the unique influence of the Islay terroir on the taste of the single malts. Day after day, the distillery team devotes itself to the origin and variety-specific character of individual barley varieties. Barley not only forms the essence of the whiskey, but is also the living expression of the earth from which it comes.

This whiskey tells the story of the island of Islay and of the people who live and work there. The search for the perfect barley began back in 2004 when Raymond Stewart grew barley on his farm in Kentraw Islay, just a mile from the distillery. The crop was malted and distilled separately from the Scottish barley. It may even have been the very first Islay single malt ever made from 100% island barley.

Today, 19 years later, the Bruichladdich distillery operates with a total of 20 agricultural distilleries partners on Islay. These partnerships not only help develop new soil improving practices and promote the cultivation of diverse crops, but also support the entire agricultural community.

The Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013 is the result of this long-standing dedication and collaboration. Distilled in 2013, the barley comes from eight farms spread across the island. With a calm complexity, this single malt presents itself in a delicate balance of fruit and smoke, which gives it its fame. It is 50% vol. bottled and has a peat content of 40ppm.

Let your nose seduce you as malty cookies and peat glow caress your senses. Sweet vanilla, notes of honey, toffee and crème brûlée then unfold. On the palate you can expect a fascinating interplay of initial citrus flavors, which are harmoniously rounded off by the gentle peat smoke and merge into a melange of apricot, peach and ripe melon. With nuances of stone fruits and toasted oak, this treat ends with a wonderfully balanced finish, accompanied by a lingering hint of the characteristic barbecue smoke that Port Charlotte is known for.

Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013 is not just a whiskey, but a work of art that reflects the passion and dedication of the people who make it. It celebrates the beauty of the island of Islay while supporting local agriculture and the wider island community. Immerse yourself in this unique taste experience and let yourself be enchanted by the fascination of the Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013.
