Portrait: What makes the Dingle Grianstad an Gheimhridh - Wheel of the Year Series
On the Dingle Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland the Celtic heritage is still there today noticeable - thanks to the Dingle Distillery not just in the form of relics. The hand-crafted distillery revives the thousands of years of history of its homeland with a series of special bottlings: The “Wheel of the Year” series is based on the Celtic wheel of the year . Dingle releases a limited edition whiskey for each of its eight sections.
With Grianstad an Gheimhridh the Irish are celebrating winter. The single malt is a homage to the Celtic winter solstice festival of the same name. Grianstad means something like “the standing still of the sun”. And so Dingles Grianstad an Gheimhridh is also an expression for the season in which darkness takes hold.
The distillers express this in terms of taste by preparing their single malt according to the initial Matured in former bourbon barrels refined in dark fruity Tawny Port Casks. Grianstad an Gheimhridh exudes aromas of blackcurrant jelly, pomegranate, cinnamon toast and warm ginger on the nose. On the palate there are hints of red berries and dark chocolate with a hint of warm cloves and creamy-soft fudge. The spicy aftertaste slowly subsides and leaves a lingering sweetness on the tip of the tongue.
