Portrait: What makes The Octomore Edition 14.2 special.
Like The Octomore Edition 14.1, The Octomore Edition 14.2 is made from 100% Scottish Mainland Concerto barley with a phenol content of 128.9ppm.
However, the ripening took place in a mix of sherry and wine casks, which gives it a different, very exciting profile.
Head Distiller Adam Hannett is very fortunate to be able to choose from more than 200 different cask types. For The Octomore Edition 14.2, he chose former Oloroso and Amarone barrels from the best wine-growing regions in Spain and Italy.
With their nutty sweetness, this creates an exciting counterpoint to the strong peat smoke of the Octomore. The final blend took place in French oak to give the single malt depth and complexity. The typical intense peat smoke of the Octomore harmonizes perfectly with the sherry cask, which gives it a wonderfully dry fruitiness and structure. The result is a complex, elegantly smoky single malt that is reminiscent of red fruits and roasted coffee beans.
Tasting Notes: This is how The Octomore Edition 14.2 tastes
- Nose: initially leather, plums, red currants and barley malt, followed by aromas of toasted oak and hints of cinnamon, green apple and black pepper - initially restrained and rather dry smoke is supported by red fruits, creamy porridge as well as heather and a little pipe tobacco
- Palate: the influence of European oak is very clear - dry and spicy, again the toasted one Oak, with roasted coffee beans - gradually a certain sweetness of fruit cake and dried fruits is added as well as a hint of black pepper - with a little water the smoke and the fruity sweetness of the Wine Casks intensify and bring out notes of apples and pears
- Finish: clearly smoked malt, glowing charcoal, sea salt and earthy Octomore smoke on the finish
