Portrait: What the Dingle Lúnasa - Wheel of the Year Series

On the Dingle Peninsula in south-west Ireland, the Celtic heritage can still be felt today - not only thanks to the Dingle Distillery in the form of relics. The artisanal distillery brings the thousand-year-old history of its homeland to life with a series of special bottlings.

The “Wheel of the Year” series orients itself on the Celtic Wheel of the Year. This solar calendar shows the time and seasons and is divided into eight sections. Dingle is releasing a limited-edition whiskey for each of them (and celebrating the traditional Wren's Day with a bonus dram, too).

Following the single malts Samhain for the Celtic New Year, Lá le Bríde for the beginning of spring and Bealtaine for the summer season, the Irish are now starting the autumn with Lúnasa. The single malt pays homage to the festival of the same name, which the Celtic deity Lugh organized in memory of his foster mother Tailtiu. As the Earth Mother, she watched over Ireland's fertile landscapes. After preparing the Emerald Isle fields for cultivation, she is said to have died of exhaustion.

Lúnasa matured in bourbon casks with a exquisite finish in bourbon casks by Widow Jane from Brooklyn, New York. With red berries, salted caramel, ginger and spices, it creates anticipation for the coming season.

• Nose: Ripe red berries, warm salted caramel, lemon sorbet and creamy butterscotch 
• Palate: Sweetness of barley sugar with a sprinkling of spices and hints of dark chocolate with raspberries
