Portrait: What makes the Akkeshi Seimei 2022 Peated.

The Akkeshi distillery only started operating about seven years ago with two pot stills from Forsyths and is already writing success story. Like its role models on the whisky island of Islay, the distillery from the Hokkaido region is located directly on the sea - just a few meters from the Pacific Ocean. Surrounded by swamps, it also has direct Access to the local peat, through which even the water for production flows.

The distillery releases its small-batch whiskies in the “24 Solar Term Series”, inspired by the 24 solar years of the ancient Asian calendar. The lightly peated Akkeshi Seimei 2022 is the seventh release in the series. Seimei means “fresh, bright, lively” and stands for the time of awakening after winter. Swallows swoop across the dark green and bright blue packaging reflecting this contrasting time. Matured in different types of casks, the whiskey develops notes of caramel fudge and honey, lemon and soy sauce, among other things.
