Portrait: What makes the Experimental Grain Whisky Compass Box special

The big Advantage of Blended Whisky? You are not limited to the character of one distillery, but can enjoy the best characteristics from different distilleries combined. Hardly anyone can do this at such a high level as Compass Box. John Glaser and team create textures and flavors that a single whiskey often cannot achieve. For their luxury blends the “Whiskymakers” combine high-quality single malt and single grain whiskies from their own barrel warehouse in Scotland.

John Glaser and his team built their Experimental Grain Whiskey on a batch of Loch Lomond Whisky, which, excitingly, is not grain. It is based exclusively on peated barley malt, but is distilled in the Coffey Still. Therefore you can't call it malt. Compass Box describes the whiskey with notes of pear, vanilla and smoke as “single grain”. Exotic-fruity components from North British, spicy-sweet single grain from Cameronbridge and the creamy Compass Box Blended Grain Hedonism masterfully round off the appetizing Limited Edition.

The whiskies used in detail:
The North British Distillery (36.7%), Recharred American Oak Barrel
The Loch Lomond Distillery (31%), 2nd-fill Bourbon Barrel
Hedonism Blended Grain (17.8%), 2nd-fill Bourbon Barrel
The Cameronbridge Distillery (14.5%), Recharred American Oak Hogshead

Tasting Notes: This is how the Experimental Grain Whiskey Compass Box tastes like

  • Nose: a tempting aroma full of contrasts - banana and toffee mix with a soft, hearty smoky note from the grill and a hint of rum and raspberry
