During the last century, nearly a hundred of Scotland's malt whisky distilleries have either closed or destroyed - many in the name of progress
These venerable brands were considered lost forever - until now!

The Lost Distillery Company is independent and wants to bring the old names and their whiskys back to life.
For this purpose, new interpretations of these long-forgotten whiskeys are created from historical documents with a lot of research.
Young and old Casks are used for these whiskys, which result in a taste profile that corresponds to 15-18 year old whiskys.

The Dalaruan Distillery was founded in Campbeltown in 1825 and operated until 1925.
Dalaruan, like other Campbeltown distilleries, got its water from Crosshill Loch.
The lake was built by the Duke of Argyll to encourage the establishment of distilleries through a clean and constant supply of water.
Crosshill Loch is filled with spring water from higher up at Beinn Ghuilean, which flows over limestone before settling in the hole.
Limestone adds minerals like calcium and filters out impurities.
The high volume of precipitation in the area ensured that the burners never ran out of water.

Dalaruan was complemented on its property by two private 9-foot wells, which Alfred Barnard assured readers in 1887 contained the highest quality natural sources, mainly to reduce the alcohol content of the whisky before it was put into casks for maturation.

Dalaruan was bottled in rum, sherry, beer, wine and fresh oak Casks in its early years.
It was common for customers to bring their kegs back to the distillery to be refilled.
Although there was no legal requirement to age whisky until 1916, it became clear that some aging was required to improve the youthful spirit.
Using a David Colville Cask would add a touch of tropical fruit and caramel notes - say the distillery's history books.

In 1835 there were 29 distilleries in Campbeltown, including Dalaruan - at its height 34 distilleries operated in the "whisky capital" before the economic collapse occurred in the 1920s.
Campbeltown's decline as the whisky capital in the 1920s was due to overproduction, U.S. bans, blenders' fondness for Speyside scotch, and the impact of minimal aging and post-war tax increases - this perfect storm forced the distilling families to live better overseas lives to search.
When Dalaruan closed in 1925, old stocks were sold and the buildings were demolished within five years and replaced by a housing estate in Parliament Place.
It is a tragedy that this legend got lost in history.

Nose: gentle spicy aromas - with ripe tropical fruits and slight hints of sea salt
Taste: at the beginning again the fruit, then smoked meat and dried fruits
Finish: long and pleasant with a fruity sweetness
