In 1907 Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) started his first of three research trips to Antarctica.
His goal was to be the first person to reach the geographic south pole to reach.
With the research vessel Nimrod the team also started with a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky from Chas. MacKinlay & Co. that was specially bottled for the expedition.
Five cases of this Whisky remained in Antarctica, buried deep under snow, back near the set up camp.
Almost 100 years later one of these boxes was found and brought to the Canterbury Museum in New Zealand.
Whyte & Mackay, the current owner of MacKinlay, decided to analyze the Whisky and bring out a reproduction of the Whisky.
... and here it is!
None other than Richard Paterson is responsible for the recipe of this Vatted Malt (only Malt Whiskys were used to recreate the original).
Nose: initially ripe, red apples and Freshly baked yeast cake, with brown cane sugar, caramel and vanilla - behind it spicy oak aromas, mild honey and cinnamon
Finish: long and soft finish - oranges and caramel bl eiben present for a long time
