Founded in 2005 by the brothers Francis & Ian Cuthbert in the Scottish Lowlands. The name Daftmill means "crazy mill" and is based on the adjacent small river, which seems as if this flows up the mountain - the inhabitants call the river Daft Burn (crazy brook).
On the Daftmill Farm, everything actually revolves around the cultivation of brewing barley, the rearing of beef cattle, potatoes, carrots and broccoli.
However, since 2018 the business of the Cuthbert family from Fife in the Scottish Lowlands has been firmly marked on the whiskey world map: After more than 12 years of waiting, Daftmill launched its first single malt whiskey on the market.
The Cuthberts produce their Scotch in very small quantities, sometimes no more than 20 barrels a year, from their own barley.
Firing is only done in the low season (June and July and in winter) when there is no need to plant potatoes or sow barley.
The Daftmill Summer Batch Release 2009 is now available for the European market.
The Farm Distillery has filled 1,785 bottles for this.
The basis for the Lowland Single Malt Whisky is barley of the Optic variety, which Francis Cuthbert grows in the southern fields of the farm.
The distillery chose a combination of one Sherry- and three Bourbon Casks for the first time for the 11-year aging period of the distilled brandy.
The multi-layered aromas of the limited Scotch can be explored by connoisseurs with an ideal drinking strength of 46%vol.
