The unusual name comes from Old Norse, dates back to the 13th century and is best translated as "rocky place."

The Scarabus brand was inspired by John Francis Campbell, an inquisitive and creative 19th century contemporary who was born on Islay.
He created the legendary Campbell-Stokes Sunshine Recorder, a measuring device that... Can determine the duration and intensity of sunshine throughout the day.  

True to this principle, curiosity and a keen eye also allow us to capture all of Islay's natural gifts and celebrate them in an exceptional whisky - the Scarabus.
