Portrait: What makes the Kilkerran 16 year old special

The independent Glengyle distillery was founded in 1872 by William Mitchell and produced a quintessential Campbeltown malt for half a century before closing its doors in 1925.
For more than 70 years it looked like it was This decision is final.
At the turn of the millennium, however, Winifred Ewing and Hedley Wright, both descendants of the Mitchell family, decided to enter the new era with increased knowledge: After a development phase of four years, the distillery opened on March 25th Grandly reopened in 2004.

The fact that the new malt was christened “Kilkerran” reflects the pride in the long tradition of whisky distilling in the region: the name is derived from “Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain”, an early one Christian settlement that once stood where the town of Campbeltown can now be found.

Tasting Notes: This is what the Kilkerran 16 year old tastes like

  • Nose: aromas of ripe pineapple and juicy Morello cherries - above all a gentle peat smoke
  • Palate: tropical fruits are present, especially mango and papaya, with golden syrup and ripe coconut, in the background dried apricots and a creamy vanilla note
  • Finish: in the long finish a mineral note with a hint of pepper, paired with menthol and cherries
