Portrait: What makes the Bunnahabhain Staoisha 5 years.

The 5-year-old Bunnahabhain Staoisha is a typical Islay whiskey - and therefore an atypical Bunnahabhain. Because Bunnahabhain actually falls out of the (Islay) series. The single malts of this distillery in the northeast of the island are traditionally finer, milder and, above all, less peaty than many of the famous Islay neighbors such as. B. Ardbeg, Lagavulin or Laphroaig.

But the Stoaisha is a single malt whisky that brings everything that the friends of Islay whiskys appreciate: peat, smoke and plenty of strength! The Bunnahabhain Staoisha embodies this character perfectly. Bottled at the young age of 5 and with muscular 60,2vol.% alcohol, it has an almost irrepressible strength. He is also heavily peated. In contrast to Bunnahabin, the barley malt used was heavily peated. This ensures the powerfully spicy smoke notes. And the barrel also does its part. "Dechar / Rechar" is on the very detailed label. This indicates that the inside of the hogsheads used (former bourbon barrels with around 225 liters) were planed off and burned out again severely.

Responsible for this unusual bottling is not the distillery Bunnahabhain itself, but one of the big "independent bottlers": Signatory Vintage. The company has enjoyed an excellent reputation for its outstanding single-barrel bottling for many years. Chef Andrew Symington has it easy, the proverbial good nose for the right barrel!

This single cask bottling was named after Loch Stoaisha, a small, remote lake not far from Bunnahabhain. The distillery uses its water to cool the stills.

The number of bottles of the 5-year-old Bunnahabhain Stoaisha is very limited, there are only 326 bottles. So it's best to try it quickly before it is finished.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Bunnahabhain Staoisha tastes 5 years

• Nose: Clear smoky notes like from smoked meat over the campfire and a pleasant honey sweetness. In the background notes of citrus.
• Taste: Very powerful on the tongue, but round and not pungent. In addition to the citrus notes of limes and oranges, there are other fruit flavors reminiscent of pears and ripe apples. Above all the spicy smoke and a hint of dark pepper.
• Finish: medium and intense, the peat smoke remains last.
