Portrait: What makes the Mekhong special

The Bangyihan Distillery produces Thailand's answer to Whisky and Rum made from a molasses and rice distillate.
Mekhong is named after the river of the same name that crosses Thailand.

Bottled with an alcohol content of 35%vol. The Mekhong impresses with its striking softness and mildness.
Even if many people refer to the Mekhong as Whisky or Rum, it is neither one nor the other.
The basis for it like Rum, Mekhong is molasses made from sugar cane, but it is also accompanied by a distillate made from rice - similar to Japanese Sake.

Drinking recommendation:

Sabai Sabai - The classic Mekhong cocktail
15ml Mekhong
15ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
7.5ml sugar syrup
2-3 leaves of sweet Thai basil
Club Soda

Pour Mekhong, freshly squeezed lemon juice and sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker, add ice cubes and shake vigorously. Pour into a chilled long drink or highball glass filled with ice cubes, top up with club soda and garnish with the Thai basil leaves.

Tasting Notes: This is what the Mekhong tastes like

  • Nose: a pleasant sweetness with light toffee aromas, paired with the scent of fresh exotic herbs
  • Palate: very soft with a distinctly pleasant mouthfeel - again the soft sweetness, clear notes of toffee, caramel and molasses - in the background there are slight hints of spices
  • Finish: long in the finish with a balanced sweetness - the spicy notes come forward a little
