Portrait: What defines the Glenallachie 11 years Moscatel Wood Finish.
This 11-year-old GlenAllachie was initially stored in American ex-bourbon oak barrels. This is the most common type of barrel in which many Scottish single malts mature. The GlenAllachie then received another maturation period, the so-called finish, in former Moscatel wine barrels.
Alongside port and Madeira, Moscatel is one of the great Portuguese sweet wines. It is made from grapes from the Muscat grape varieties and can come from the Portuguese regions of Setúbal or Duoro. The Moscatel wines have been aged for at least two years, but some particularly high-quality wines are even longer. The Moscatel wines are of high quality and have been produced in the same way for many generations. Alcohol is added during production to stop fermentation. The natural sugar of the Muscat grapes is therefore not completely converted into alcohol, so that inevitably a relatively large amount of residual sugar remains. The resulting Moscatel wines are sweet and have a high alcohol content.
The combination of the two different barrel types gives the GlenAllachie Moscatel Finish its special multi-layered character. Spicy notes combine excellently with a fruity sweetness.
The 11-year-old GlenAllachie Moscatel Wood Finish is one of the four bottlings in the Wood Finish series from GlenAllachie. For these, selected malts are matured in different barrel types. In addition to Moscatel, there are also Madeira, Port and Rye Wood finishes. All wonderful single Speyside Malts from the heart of the Scottish Highlands.
The GlenAllachie Distillery is located in the town of Aberlour, which is probably known to most by the popular malt whiskey of the same name. A lot has happened a few meters south of the Aberlour distillery since the busy Billy Walker took over the GlenAllachie Distillery in 2017. Previously produced almost exclusively for blends, GlenAllachie is now available in numerous excellent single malt fillings. And with their balanced, sweet and fruity style, they are justifiably very popular.
It's best to try it out and find your personal favorite. An enjoyable trip is guaranteed.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Glenallachie Moscatel Wood Finish tastes
Aroma: Clearly pronounced sweetness and fruitiness. Peaches, nectarines and pineapple meet honey and sweet pastries with cinnamon.
Taste: White chocolate and mocha notes join the fruit flavors, which now also bring a touch of grapefruit and fresh orange peel.
Finish: fine spice, honey sweetness and fresh fruit notes ensure a complex, very harmonious finish.
