Portrait: What defines the Glenallachie 11 years Port Wood Finish.
The 11-year-old GlenAllachie Port Wood Finish is one of the four members of the popular Wood Finish series from GlenAllachie. For these, selected malts are matured in different barrel types. Means: After the first maturation in barrel type X, the whiskey is re-bedded and given an additional maturation period, the so-called “finish”, in a barrel of different types. This gives the malt whiskey additional nuances in aroma and taste.
This 11-year-old GlenAllachie was initially stored in American ex-bourbon oak barrels. This is the most common type of barrel in which many Scottish single malts mature. The GlenAllachie then received its finish in so-called port pipes. These are barrels made of European oak with a capacity of approx. 650 liters, in which port wine matured. Port wine is the traditional Portuguese sweet wine from the Alto Douro region in the Portuguese Douro Valley. It is named after the Portuguese port city of Porto.
The combination of these two different barrel types gives the GlenAllachie Port Finish its deep ruby red color and the special, lush character. Ripe dark fruits meet dark chocolate and a fine sweetness. An excellent single speech malt from the heart of the Scottish Highlands.
The GlenAllachie Distillery is located in the town of Aberlour, which is probably known to most by the popular malt whiskey of the same name. A lot has happened a few meters south of the Aberlour distillery since the busy Billy Walker took over the GlenAllachie Distillery in 2017. Previously produced almost exclusively for blends, GlenAllachie is now available in numerous excellent single malt fillings. And with their balanced, sweet and fruity style, they are justifiably very popular. Well done, Billy!
