Tasting Selection Islay Whisky 5 x 0,04l
With this selection we have made a selection of Islay whiskeys for all friends of the rather smoky whiskeys.
Islay whiskeys are characterized by their smoky / peaty note and are very popular among whiskey fans.
The following Islay whiskeys are included in the Tasting Selection:
Laphroaig 10 years 40% vol. Sample 0.04l
The Laphroaig distillery on the island of Islay produces Prince Charles' favorite whiskey, which is proudly displayed on the labels of the bottlings.
Laphroaig is a typical representative of Islay - for Laphroaig the principle applies: "Either you love him or you hate him!".
The taste is overwhelming, whiskey connoisseurs use words like seaweed, diesel, tar or disinfectant to describe it.
- Aroma: at the beginning equally strong with a lot of smoke and peat, spicy aromas and liquorice, slightly salty - you can see the proximity to the sea - in the background burned, damp wood
- Taste: now clearly seaweed and a lot of oak, then intense phenols and iodine, reminiscent of a first aid kit with plasters and gauze bandages, some old leather - then becoming more spicy with notes of black pepper and cardamom
- Finish: long finish, again peat and iodine - some tar and damp wood
Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries that still dig their own peat and whose "malting floors" are still in operation.
Caol Ila 12 year old 43% vol. Sample 0.04l
Caol Ila is an insider tip, compared to other Islay whiskeys it is light - but it has an intense peat taste.
Most of the production goes in blends like Johnnie Walker, so that the bottlings as single malt are relatively small.
- Aroma: peat smoke, fresh seaweed, slightly salty
- Taste: peat smoke and smoked fish, tar and damp leather, slightly salty
- Finish: smoked fish again, now almost as if burnt, oily notes that last a long time, with light lemon and caramel
Lagavulin 16 Year Old 43%vol. Sample 0,04l
There are only a few malts that are as complex and smoky as 16-year-old Lagavulin.
It starts sweetly and then unfolds with force its sharpness and peatiness.
Jim Murray, the whiskey author u. Critic writes about him: "Lagavulin is to be treated with caution, but reverence, this is not a malt to sip lightly - it devours one!"
- Nose: powerful with lots of smoke, iodine and a sweet spice - reminiscent of strong, green tea, sherry and creamy vanilla
- Taste: strong and rich in taste, full mouthfeel with a fruity sweetness and sherry - lots of peat and oak
- Finish: long, spicy finish - again the peat smoke, with dates, figs and vanilla.
Kilchoman Sanaig 46% vol. Sample 0.04l
Awarded as the best single malt Scotch whiskey with no age information at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) 2016
Sanaig is a composition of four- and five-year-old exBourbon and exOloroso sherry barrels, the proportion of exSherry barrels used is significantly higher than in the Machir Bay bottling.
- Aroma: soft fruits with caramel and vanilla
- Taste: toffee and peat smoke - then light citrus notes and a gentle sweetness
- Finish: very nice balance between peat smoke, ripe fruits and sweetness
Bunnahabhain 12 year old 46.3% vol. Sample 0.04l
Only lightly peated single malt whiskey from the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay.
The 12-year-old has a light aroma of fresh sea air, plus a light salt note and a gentle, soft tone of honey - in the background a trace of peat and smoke.
