Portrait: What makes the Sild Crannog.
For this strictly limited whiskey specialty, malting barley and spring water are used from the Island of Sylt used. The Sild Crannog is completed in small wooden barrels on the historic cutter “Gret Palucca” with its home port of List. Traditionally, ships are moored to wooden posts (Gaelic: CRANNOG). The movements of the sea and the harsh North Sea climate ensure an unmistakable single malt. Its complex and subtle peat-salty aroma is reminiscent of the spray of the sea waves constantly hitting the ship's planks.
This is the only whisky in the world that is stored on a ship. Salty sea air, plus the constant rocking of the ship, which keeps the contents of the 100 liter barrels constantly moving and with the wood The connection has an impact on the whiskey, as do the different temperature conditions during the three years of maturation. This excellent drop reveals its wonderful aroma best pure at a temperature of around 14°C.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Sild Crannog tastes
- Nose: smoky-leathery aromas, plus some vanilla and malt with sea salt, iodine and seaweed - spicy tones of white pepper develop in the background
- Palate: creamy, soft and very nicely rounded, now clear sea salt and iodine - lots of malt and a bitter, spicy note
- Finish: long and warming in the finish
