Portrait: What makes the Tomintoul Tlàth special
Tomintoul's gentle, soft single malt (Tlàth is Gaelic and means gentle or soft) is sold without an age statement bottled.
Matured in exBourbon Barrels made of American oak.
It is considered one of the smoothest whiskies on Scottish Speyside: Tomintoul is equally popular with beginners and as a relaxed after-work dram. The single malt from the picturesque Cairngorms National Park has been produced using traditional methods since the distillery was founded in 1964.
Robert Fleming has been directing Tomintoul's four tall, high-flowing pot stills for over 20 years. As a fourth-generation master distiller, the distiller has significantly shaped the extremely soft, malty-floral Tomintoul character - and created accessible “gentle drams” that are award-winning and inexpensive at the same time.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Tomintoul Tlàth tastes like
- Nose: clearly a Speysider - light with sweet toffee and vanilla, with traces of mint leaves and lemon peel behind it
- Palate: light and creamy in taste with spicy notes of white pepper and oak - followed by nutmeg and roasted vanilla pods
- Finish: spicy in the finish with tones of Shortbread and fresh mint
